MUSIC OF THE 20TH CENTURY
LESSON SEVEN: Springtime & Summertime in America.
And now, to the great land of America...
This beautiful scene (right) is taken somewhere in the vast Appalachian Mountains - the setting that inspired the Aaron Copeland work 'Appalachian Spring'. You should google 'Appalachian Mountains' to get a feel for the vastness and beauty of these mountains that span across most of the eastern states of America, all the way up into Canada… Otherwise, just listen to Copeland's Appalachian Spring, and hopefully you'll get a feel for it. After Spring inevitably comes Summertime (nice segue!?) so after having a sing and play through Copeland's 'Simple Gifts', we'll jump from the mountains across to New York City, where George Gershwin composed the Opera Porgy & Bess for the Broadway stage... |
